Where Are the Canary Islands?

The Canary Islands, also known as “the Canaries”, are an archipelago that's part of Spain. However, you won't find these islands close to the country; instead, they're located off the northwest coast of Africa, nearby Western Sahara and Morocco.

Historically, the Canary Islands have been incredibly significant since they were considered a “bridge” between North America, South America, Africa, and Europe.

The Canary Islands are especially popular with UK tourists thanks to their year-round warmth and spectacular landscape views.

The Islands also situated a relatively short plane ride away, so can be accessed easily.

What Are the Individual Islands?

Seven main islands make up the Canary Islands. They are Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro.

Find out more about each of these islands below.

Tenerife

Tenerife is one of the most popular islands on the Canaries. In 2018, it received the most tourists out of all the islands; it got 5.95 million to be exact.

Why is it such a fan favourite? Because there are tons to do on this island, which makes it very family-friendly.

For example, you'd expect most tourists to visit in the summertime and get fabulously tanned on Tenerife's breathtaking sandy beaches.

However, Tenerife has so much more to offer than simply sunbathing.

In the winter, you can visit Teide National Park, where its slopes are dusted with powdery snow that's perfect for sledging. Offered all year-round, you can tee off at one of the 8x green golf courses located on this island.

For those who love to explore nature, Tenerife has several beautiful forests for you to visit. They offer varying plant life and a mixture of trails to explore. Originally volcanic islands, you can even explore underground lava tubes and see amazing pyramids formed out of lava stone.

When you get tired, you can always relax at the beach, eat at one of the Michelin-starred restaurants, or go to some village bars to take in the local scene. To party, head to Canta Cruz or Playa de las Americas.

Out of all the apartments in the Canary Islands to rent, you'll find the most located here.

Gran Canaria

After Tenerife, Gran Canaria is the second-most travelled to island in the Canary Islands. In 2018, it received 4.5 million tourists.

Recently, the Poema del Mar opened up, which features an aquarium and indoor rainforest. An exceptional attraction for couples and families alike.

For those who love history and culture, Gran Canaria offers both. You'll see where Christopher Columbus came (Vegueta), and there are plenty of boutiques around. There's also the Elder Museum of Science and Technology which offers the latest in virtual reality (VR) and is excellent value for money to visit.

The nightlife in Gran Canaria is equally outstanding, especially in Las Palmas. Here you can choose from a variety of bars and nightclubs, so you're bound to find one offering your favourite songs.

Lanzarote

The third most popular island for tourists in the Canary Islands is Lanzarote; 3.06 million tourists visited in 2018. Lanzarote is famous because it has activities for people of all sporting abilities.

For example, there is an excellent selection of surf camps that also offer yoga, spa treatments, and meditation. For those seeking rest and relaxation, you'll also find a vast number of wellness centres and spas are available.

If you're into hardcore sports activities, you need to look no further than the Lanzarote Ironman. If you prefer keeping your head under the water, there's also the Museo Atlantico, an underwater museum that should be on any scuba divers bucket list.

Lanzarote offers different scenery to the other Canary Islands because of César Manrique's influence – a Spanish artist, sculptor, architect and activist. There are also strict building controls for houses in Lanzarote, so they are all painted white and have either green or blue shutters.

As far as nature goes, there are beautiful beach grottos, volcanic landscapes, and more. There's also Timanfaya National Park, which is a sight to behold.

The nightlife in Lanzarote is excellent too; you'll find most clubs and bars around Puerto Del Carmen and Playa Blanca.

Fuerteventura

Next on the most popular list for the Canaries is Fuerteventura. It received 2.25 million tourists in 2018.

The main attraction of Fuerteventura is its coastline, which means surfers and beachgoers flock to this island. Some would argue that Fuerteventura has some of the most beautiful beaches in all of Europe, but the only way to find out if they're right is to visit for yourself.

It's an outstanding destination for both couples and families, so no matter who you're travelling with, you're bound to have a great time on this island.

La Palma

La Palma is also known as “La Isla Bonita” by the locals, which means “The Beautiful Island”. You'll find breathtaking black sand beaches (Puerto Naos and Puerto de Tazacorte), waterfalls, rock pools, and forests.

For you nature lovers, you'll be pleased to know there's a La Palma Walking Festival in the autumn, which takes you all around to underground caves, old villages, and volcanic areas.

If you're not a fan of commercialised places, then you'll love La Palma. Not as many tourists come through this island, which means you'll get a better glimpse of the local culture.

La Gomera

La Gomera is a great romantic getaway, whether you've been together 10 days or 10 years. Since there are no direct flights to La Gomera, you'll have to island-hop to get here. This island is so amazingly beautiful you'll think you've walked into a fairytale.

On this island, you'll enjoy vast valleys, and in its interior, you'll find Garajonay National Park, a Unesco World Heritage site. Filled with ferns, laurels, and moss, this will offer some outstanding backgrounds for your holiday photos. If you love to hike, then you'll have to visit La Gomera at least once.

Just like on the other islands, you'll get to swim and sunbathe on the exotic coastlines.

The great thing if you get bored with one spot, or if you're generally an adventurous person, there is a ferry that runs between the three ports of La Gomera (Valley Gran Rey, Playa de Santiago, and San Sebastian) to whisk you away.

One thing we would advise is that La Gomera is less kid-friendly than the other islands. Despite this, you can find some family-friendly amenities at some places.

El Hierro

Another island great for couples or small families if you're in love with nature, especially diving.

El Hierro is the second smallest island in the Canary Islands, which means if you want to see everything here, it'll be easy to do so. Everything should be within walking distance for you.

The island is also the least developed, so it is perfect for nature lovers.

You'll find some of the most beautiful beaches in all of the Canaries (although a lot are rocky), plus crystal clear waters. Unsurprisingly these features are what helps make El Hierro a fantastic diving spot.
